Alfacalcidol, an organic compound with the chemical formula C27H44O2, is an analogue of calcitriol. Alfacalcidol can increase the reabsorption of calcium in the small intestine and renal tubules, inhibit parathyroid hyperplasia, reduce the synthesis and release of parathyroid hormone, inhibit bone resorption, increase transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B) and insulin-like Growth factor-I (1GF-I) synthesis, promotes collagen and bone matrix protein synthesis, regulates muscle calcium metabolism, promotes muscle cell differentiation, enhances muscle strength, increases neuromuscular coordination, and reduces the tendency to fall.
