Minoxidil, chemical name 6-(1-piperidinyl)-2,4-pyrimidinediamine, 3-oxide, is a white or off-white crystalline powder.   Clinically, as a potassium ion channel opener, minoxidil can directly relax vascular smooth muscle, has a strong expansion of small arteries, lowering peripheral resistance, lowering blood pressure, and has no effect on volumetric blood vessels, so minoxidil can promote venous return.
