The articular cartilage is composed mainly of water (75%), collagen type II (15%) and aggrecans (9%) such as hyaluronic acid and chondroitin. Type II collagen is the predominant form of collagen in the sternal cartilage and accounts for approximately 60% of the dry weight of the cartilage. Dietary supplements that contain collagen type II, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate may be beneficial during aging and joint diseases.
