Quinine, also known as cinchona frost and cinchona alkaloids, is the main alkaloid found in the bark of the cinchona tree and its relatives in the Rubiaceae family. Quinine is one of the oldest antimalarial drugs. As early as the 15th century, cinchona bark containing quinine had become a specific drug widely used to treat malaria. Its antimalarial effect is similar to that of chloroqui and works by interfering with DNA synthesis.
