Nonapeptide-1 is a biomimetic peptide that has a very good match with the MC1 receptor on melanocytes. Therefore, it can act as an antagonist of melanocyte-stimulating hormone, competitively binding to the MC1 receptor and preventing tyrosinase from being further activated to produce melanin.
